Chicanx and Latinx Studies Major

The Chicanx and Latinx Studies Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) is an interdisciplinary program that explores the life and culture of Chicanx and Latinx communities in the United States and beyond. This major encompasses all Chicanx and Latinx experiences and histories while emphasizing perspectives from the arts, humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields. It is designed to benefit a wide range of future professionals, including scientists, public health officials, engineers, teachers, artists, and policy makers, who will engage with Chicanx and Latinx communities. Students have the flexibility to shape their individual curriculum by combining courses offered through affiliated departments with new CLS-specific courses, fostering a major that spans multiple departments. This interdisciplinary and core disciplinary approach prepares students for diverse careers in the private, public, and government sectors.

Requirements

The Chicanx and Latinx Studies Major will require 56 units of study (14 courses) to complete the program. The B.A. program of study includes:

  • 2 Lower-division courses (8 units)
    1. CLX 1: Cornerstone of Chicanx and Latinx Studies OR: ETHN 30: Intro to Chicanx and Latinx Studies
    2. One additional course from the following:
      • CLX 2: Chicanx and Latinx Gender and Sexuality
      • CLX 3: Special Topics in Chicanx and Latinx Studies
      • HILD 7C: Race and Ethnicity in the United States
      • Course from another department/university by petition.
  • 12 Upper-division courses (48 units)
    1. 3 Upper-division core courses
      • CLX 101: Approaches to Research in Chicanx and Latinx Studies OR AAS 170. Legacies of Research on Disenfranchised Communities
      • CLX 102: Research Practicum in Chicanx and Latinx Studies
      • CLX 103: Capstone of Chicanx and Latinx Studies
    2. 9 Upper-division elective courses selected from the Chicanx and Latinx Studies Course Offerings
  • Students may take no more than three upper-division courses in any one department.
  • Students can only overlap a maximum of two courses (8 units) between their major and minor.
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA
  • Students may petition to receive credit for courses not listed in the catalog
  • All study abroad courses must be petitioned.
