Dime con quien andas y te diré quien eres. Tell me with whom you walk and I will tell you who you are.
The Chicanx and Latinx Studies (CLS) program at UC San Diego is an interdisciplinary field of study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. CLS brings students, staff, faculty, and community together in the scholarly examination of Chicanx and Latinx life, history, and culture.
Minor
We offer an interdisciplinary minor which provides a broad introduction to Spanish-speaking communities in the United States and sponsor related events about art and politics. As Chicanxs and Latinxs continue to fuel seismic demographic shifts in the United States, CLS explores their history, how they shape the present, and the ways they will transform the future.
Courses
The Chicanx and Latinx Studies (CLS) program draws on courses available through various departments including anthropology, communication, education studies, ethnic studies, history, literature, music, political science, theater, and more.
Academic Excellence Initiative
At UC San Diego, we believe education should be accessible to all ambitious and talented students. Therefore, we are proud to announce the launch of the Latinx/Chicanx Academic Excellence Initiative, a campus-wide program designed to reflect and serve California’s fastest growing demographic.
Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI)
UC San Diego has made great strides toward becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). With 23% full-time Latinx undergraduate student enrollment as of fall 2020, we are considered an Emerging HSI. This puts us close to our goal of at least 25% full-time Latinx undergraduate enrollment, making us eligible for HSI designation by the U.S. Department of Education. Additionally, as a renowned research institution with a strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) focus, UC San Diego aims to become a model STEM HSI.
